Motivation

My decision to come to Tokyo had several reasons. First of all I was curious about the japanese culture and fascinated by the design. The difference between the pure and clear and the excessive design is a phenomenon that only appears in Japan in such a way. The japanese culture as well shows this ambiguity: Old asian traditions mix with western influences. From having an insight in this fascinating country, I expected to make great new experiences and considered it an investment in my training as well as in my personal progression.

While experiencing such different thinking, coming to Tokyo Zokei University offered me the opportunity to continue my studies in a very similar way as at the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd, since both focus their training on the theories of the Bauhaus and the HfG Ulm.

Study

What I appreciated most about the study at Zokei University was the analytic approach, understanding a subject before designing it. Furthermore, I liked the many influences of the artistic department you could feel even in the design departments.
I took two main classes, Tamada sensei’s “Interaction Design” and “Design Management” courses. In both, big part of the design process was analysis and research, including field trips and prototype testing. I really enjoyed those classes, especially because of Tamada sensei’s translations in English. From time to time we had to hold presentations, which was good for practicing my English communication skills.
In addition, I took part in the pot-making club and Oki sensei’s seminar, which was very entertaining. There I had many interesting conversations with japanese students, as well as weekly insights in the japanese “Okashi” diversity. I prepared an Arduino project there, and Oki sensei’s support was very helpful in this.
Shunsuke san, the exchange student assistant, was very helpful in orienting ourselves at the University as well as in everyday life in Japan and always had our ear when we had problems. In all the classes the topics were translated and explained well to me, but still I would recommend the soon-to-be exchange students decent Japanese skills in order to get to know the students better.

Reflection

After those five months in Japan I can say that I really enjoyed being there. Not only was it an amazing benefit for my studies, but a great experience I will life off for my whole life. I would definitely do it again, but this time with better knowledge of the japanese language. The people I met there, the professors a well as the students, were the kindest characters, and I am glad to say, that they gave many impulses on my own personality.

Thank you very much for this experience and take care everyone!
