History of Tokyo Zokei University

1954.4 Kuwasawa Yoko establishes "Kuwasawa Design School"
Walter Gropius, the founder and the first Principal of Bauhaus, visits the school with his wife.
1957.4 An educational foundation of Kuwasawa Gakuen is established.
1966.1 Tokyo Zokei university is admitted by the Ministry of Education, the establisher being the educational foundation Kuwasawa Gakuen.
Tokyo Zokei University opens at Motohachioji, Hachioji,Tokyo, the president being Kuwasawa Yoko.
1969.4 The number of students admitted is increased to 200.
1977.3 "A Decade of Tokyo Zokei University" is published, commemorating the tenth anniversary.
1981.4 A new educational administration system begins with a new structure:
Department of Design (I Visual Communication Planning, II Environment Planning)
Department of Fine Arts (I Painting, II Sculpture)
1986.10 Twentieth Anniversary is celebrated.
12 Agreement on exchange program with Southern Yangtze University of China is made.
1987.4 The number of students admitted is increased to 300.
1990.6 The construction of the present campus begins at Utsunuki, Hachioji, the architect being Isozaki Arata.
1992.4 Art and Design Planning Major and Comparative Art and Design Major are newly established.
The number of students admitted is increased to 460.
Partial opening of Utsunuki campus begins.
1993.4 Everything moves to Utsunuki campus.
1995.3 Agreement of exchange program with The Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria is made.
1996.11 Thirtieth Anniversary is celebrated. "Zokei" is published as its commemoration.
1998.4 A new curriculum is set up, consisting of six majors:
Department of Design: (Visual Communication Major, Media Design Major, Environment Planning Major)
Department of Fine Arts: (Painting Major, Sculpture Major, Comparative Art and Design Major)
2001.7 Agreement on exchange program with The Willem de Kooning Academy of Hogeschool Rotterdam, The Netherlands is made.
2003.4 The structure of curriculum is revised to; nine majors in the Department of Design and two majors in the Department of Fine Arts.
The new athletic ground is completed.
2003.12 Agreement on exchange program with Royal Academy of Fine Arts, The Hague/KABK, The Netherlands is made.
2004.10 Agreement on exchange program with Konstfack University College of Arts Crafts and Design, Sweden is made.
2005.4 Graduate School[Master's Degree] is established.
2005.7 Agreement on exchange program with UWE Bristol, School of Art, Media and Design, The United Kingdom is made.
2005.10 Agreement on exchange program with School of Photography, Göteborg University, Sweden is made.
2006.10 Agreement on exchange program with Winchester Shool of Art, University of Southampton, the United Kingdom is made.
2007.6 Tokyo Zokei University becomes a member of Cumulus, International Association of University of Colleges of Art, Design and Media.
2008.2 Agreement on exchange program with Accademia di Bella Arti di Carrara, Italy is made.
