Application Policies and Procedures


Entrance exams for M.A. degree in Major in Design and Design Education Research are conducted twice a year in December and March. The entrance exam for M.A. degree in Major in Fine Arts is conducted once a year in March.

Professor Masashi Koide and Professor Toshiro Tamada will not be serving as main advisors during the Fall semester of the academic year 2018 due to the Specialized Training Course. Guidance will primarily be given by assisting advisors.

※International students must send their applications in a timely manner so that all documents arrive before or on the final date of the application period.
It is essential that all international students apply as early as possible to allow enough time to process their applications for admission.

Eligibility

Those who will be more than 22 years of age at the time of entrance (April 1, 2018), and those who apply the following now or by March 31, 2018

  1. Those who graduated college with a B.A. degree
  2. Those who have earned a B.A. diploma from the National Institution for Academic Degrees and Quality Enhancement of Higher Education.
  3. Those who have completed 16 years or more of academic education in institutions overseas and have received a B.A. diploma.
  4. Those who have completed 16 years or more of academic education via foreign correspondence courses conducted in Japan and have received B.A. diploma.
  5. Those who have completed the curriculum (of 16 years or more) at an overseas college institution that is located in Japan, is recognized by the overseas educational board, and is designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
  6. Those who have completed the specialized curriculum (of 4 years or more and which is approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) at a vocational school.
  7. Those selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan
  8. Applicants other than those listed above, who have been indivisually assessed as having an educational background equal to or above that of a college graduate.

*Foreign exchange students planning to apply with Method B must have the "Exchange Program" qualification that is valid until March 2018.
*Applicants of foreign nationalities (except Zokei students, permanent residents and special permanent residents of Japan), must have passed the N2 or above for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test, or have scored 240 or above in "Japanese" for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU).

Procedures Prior to Applying

Applicants for whom eligibility no.7 and 8 apply, will go through a pre-application screening to assess eligibility. Please submit the following documents for this pre-application assessment.

Preliminary Interviews

All applicants are subject to Preliminary Interviews with their potential supervisors. Applying for Preliminary Interviews is accepted on the University website. Details will be announced in early September 2017.
*Graduates (future or otherwise) of the undergraduate program of Zokei University who request a supervisor for their graduation research and coursework are exempted from the Preliminary Interview.

Major in Design

1.Materials to submit
(1) Portfolio or a Writing Sample
  • Your portfolio should be a compilation of your works (photographs, diagrams, concept-drawings, sketches and other related research materials) of the past 4 years which are relevant to the proposed research topic you wish to pursue at the Tokyo Zokei University, Graduate School. If your work is of a medium which cannot be compiled into a portfolio (ex. film/video works,) you may submit 2 works in its stead.
    * Film/Video works which exceed 30 minutes must be sent in advance with your application forms.
  • Should you wish to submit a writing sample, enclose with it an abstract of either Japanese (approximtely 2,000 letters) or English (approximately 700 words) with your application.
    *Writing Sample submissions will not be accepted on the examination day.
2.Essay 10:00AM ~ 11:30AM
3.Interview (5-minute presentation followed by a 10-minute Q&A.)  1:00PM ~
*Materials for the presentation (presentation boards and other materials) are permitted provided the applicant can transport it on his/her own accord.

Major in Fine Arts

1.Materials to submit
(1) A portfolio
  • Your portfolio should consist mainly of photographs or related materials of your past works. Texts, studies and work plans which illustrate your proposed future research may be added. You may choose the format of your preference.
(2) A maximum of two artworks (painting, print, sculpture, etc.) or one writing sample.
  • Artwork(s) completed within the past two years will be accepted. They must also be of (a) size(s) which the applicant can make postal and installation arrangements by her/himself.
  • Should you wish to submit a writing sample, enclose with it an abstract of either Japanese (approximtely 2,000 letters) or English (approximately 700 words) with your application.
    *Writing Sample submissions will not be accepted on the examination day.

Acceptance Announcement

Method A :December 14 (Thursday), 2017 11:00AM
Method B :March 8 (Thursday), 2018 11:00AM

A letter of "Acceptance Notification" and "Admission Documents" will be sent to successful applicants. Should you receive no notice after 4 days of the announcement dates, please contact the Admission section.
Results can also be confirmed online. Please refer to page 11 of the "Application Procedures".
Results cannot be given via the telephone.
