My study in Tokyo Zokei University

My time studying at Tokyo Zokei University was very useful to me in my future as a professional animator and designer. I found the course to be extremely interesting and was inspired by the students dedication to their discipline and the work that was produced from all areas of study at Zokei was beyond my expectations. Studying and living in the city of Tokyo amongst such an abundance of creativity gave me such inspiration and the feeling of being at the very cutting edge of modern design. At Zokei it is like being amidst a movement of creativity that gives a friendly feeling of participation and involvement with this movement towards a greater level of design and gave me an individual sense of the globalisation of modern design and its different forms. I re-learnt to draw and I found myself looking back into my own education, analysing my preconceived ideas of what design is and expanding my institutionalised thinking to accomodate every new thing I found inspired me.

The animation course itself gave me fresh perspectives on the subject. The way the course was taught meant that I was constantly required to analyse my own work and the work of others in a weekly lecture, this gave me the thought process that a professional designer should have when making decisions that will decide the course their work should be taking every step of the way through the completion of a short film. I found the lectures to be extremely challenging not just as an animator but through the use of foreign language. Fortunately my professor and some students were able to help with a knowledge of the English language although I tried my best to reach a good level of Japanese. As a foreign student I was happy to oblige when other professors or students expressed an interest in a different perspective and I found myself involved in many aspects of the Zokei life, enriching my experience and helping me to understand elements of Japanese culture and how Japanese designers work.

Tokyo Zokei University has given me an edge over the industry that will prove extremely invaluable in the future of my career and a love for the Japanese culture that I am sure will induce me to return to work in the Tokyo design movements in the future.

Thankyou very much!
